Tomi Dayo-Isijola is the managing partner Sparxe Limited, a tech-consulting firm based in Lagos, Nigeria. He has over 17years working experience, with proven expertise and delivery in IT, Real Estate, Healthcare, Energy/Power-related service sectors in Nigeria. As a trainer he has successfully delivered various instructor-led training programs physically and virtually to a wide audience (700+) – including fresh graduates to senior/C-level executives for over a decade. He holds several certifications and credentials in project management, energy management, quality management, HSE, IT/cloud solutions, consulting amongst others.

Course Overview: HSE Essentials

Format: 1-Day, Interactive, Instructor-Led Training (ILT)

Target Audience: Supervisors, team leaders, operations personnel, and employees requiring a practical grounding in Workplace Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices.

This course shifts HSE from a list of rules into an active workplace culture. Through hands-on exercises, real-world case studies, and interactive group challenges, participants will learn how to spot hazards early, assess risk dynamically, and respond effectively to workplace incidents.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this one-day workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common workplace physical, chemical, ergonomic, and psychological hazards.

  • Conduct a basic Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and apply the Hierarchy of Controls.

  • Demonstrate proper immediate actions during common workplace emergencies.

  • Contribute proactively to a positive, zero-harm safety culture within their teams.

Course Schedule & Modules

1.Module 1: Foundations of a Safety Culture:09:00 AM – 10:30 AM.

  • Topics: The true cost of accidents (direct vs. indirect); legal and moral responsibilities; shifting from reactive to proactive safety.

  • Interactive Element: The Iceberg Exercise – Teams analyze a real-world case study to uncover the hidden financial and human costs of a single workplace incident.

2.Module 2: Hazard Identification & The Risk Matrix:10:45 AM – 12:30 PM.

  • Topics: Categorizing hazards (Physical, Chemical, Biological, Ergonomic, Psychosocial); introduction to Risk Assessments and Likelihood vs. Severity matrices.

  • Interactive Element: Hazard Hunt – A visual, gamified race where participants use real workplace photos/scenarios to spot hidden dangers and plot them on a risk matrix.

3.Module 3: Controlling the Risk (The JSA Toolkit):01:30 PM – 03:00 PM.

  • Topics: The Hierarchy of Controls (Elimination, Substitution, Engineering, Administration, PPE); how to write a functional Job Safety Analysis (JSA).

  • Interactive Element: JSA Workshop – Groups are given a common operational task (e.g., changing a valve, setting up a high-reach display) and must draft a complete JSA using the hierarchy of controls.

4.Module 4: Incident Response & Continuous Improvement:03:15 PM – 04:30 PM.

  • Topics: Immediate emergency response protocols; the importance of “Near-Miss” reporting; introduction to root cause analysis.

  • Interactive Element: The Crisis Simulation – A live, table-top roleplay where teams navigate a sudden workplace emergency, managing the response, communication, and initial reporting steps.

5.Wrap-Up & Action Planning:04:30 PM – 05:00 PM.

  • Activities: Final Q&A, course evaluation, and the creation of a personal “Safety Commitments” card for participants to take back to their jobs.

Training Methodology

To keep energy levels high and ensure retention, the day utilizes the 70/30 rule (70% participant activity, 30% instructor facilitation):

  • Live Dynamic Polls: Keeping pulse checks on understanding throughout the day.

  • Breakout Challenges: Small group collaboration to solve real-world safety dilemmas.

  • Practical Checklists: Standardized templates for JSAs and hazard reporting that participants can use immediately on the job.
